Please don't misunderstand me. I disagree with that approach too. And I also disagree with its close cousin: "Something needs to be done...this is something...therefore it needs to be done."
But society does NOT exceed my expectations...yet. Education of the very young is a great challenge. I have great empathy for teachers...of the young AND old. Back in "the old days" we could well expect that learning how to add up and spell well had immediate use when we left school. (I did my schooling well before calculators and 'spellcheck' aids) Nowadays one could learn a software program that becomes obsolete before a chance to use it...and there are more less tangible examples eg our new Prime Minister speaks fluent Mandarin...to add to the Queen's English. ![]()
Today, twice as many people here attend tertiary education than 30 years ago. A new generation of employees: "They're more savvy, more materialistic, more media-saturated and more impatient than any generation that preceded them..." (source: 'Advance Australia...Where? by Hugh Mackay)
I'm guessing it's the same there. Is it just religious education's tenuous place within the school system holding your kids back?
